Theorem (MVT). Let $a < b$ be real numbers. Suppose $f: [a, b]\to\mathbb{R}$ is continuous on $[a, b]$ and differentiable on $(a, b)$. Then there exists $c\in (a, b)$ such that

\[\frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a} = f'(c).\]
